Montel, a pioneer of high-density mobile storage shelving system solutions for office, institutional and industrial applications, is pleased to announce a $1.2 million investment at its manufacturing facility for the acquisition of a state-of-the-art powder coating finishing system equipment along with the modernization of its paint line operations.

After defining its objectives, reviewing its operational needs and extensively analyzing several suppliers in the surface finishing market, Montel selected the Wagner-Group’s proposal, the market leading manufacturer of high tech products and systems for coating and decorating with paints and powder. More specifically, Montel acquired Wagner’s state-of-the-art SuperCube Plastic Booth, a super fast color-changing concept, allowing powder color changes in less than 5 minutes. As described by Wagner, the new SuperCube achieves the best utilization of space so far in the field of plastic booths. The result is a greater production capacity on a smaller area, and with a distinctly higher return on investment. Offering an ideal structure shape for powder coating, the SuperCube combines several benefits such as being compact, has a rectangular booth shape, leaves no powder deposits on the floor and offers an economical use of material.

“Montel is very excited with its state-of-the-art environmentally friendly powder coating finishing system equipment acquisition”, explained Jerome Doucet, President and CEO of Montel. “After discussions with several suppliers in the surface finishing market, Montel concluded that Wagner’s SuperCube plastic booth offered the greatest benefits for our manufacturing plant.”

As the fastest growing industrial finishing technology in North America, powder coating is an advanced method of applying a decorative and protective finish to a wide range of materials and products. The powder used for the process is a mixture of finely ground particles of pigment and resin, which is sprayed onto a surface to be coated. The charged powder particles adhere to the electrically grounded surfaces until heated and fused into a smooth coating in a curing oven. The result is a uniform, durable, high-quality, and attractive finish.

A number of factors can be attributed to the continued growth of the powder coating market, mainly environmental compliance, energy savings, efficiency, excellence of finish, and economy. Concerning the environmental benefits, while liquid finishes contain solvents which have pollutants known as volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), powder coating contains no solvents and release negligible amounts, if any, of VOC’s into the atmosphere, hence eliminating the need for costly pollution control equipment. As for energy savings/conservation, with no VOC’s, the air used to exhaust the powder spray booth can be recirculated directly into Montel’s manufacturing facility, eliminating the cost of heating or cooling the make-up air. Since less application of powder, typically one coat, is required for an acceptable finish as compared to conventional solvent-borne coatings, powder coating is more efficient. Since rejection rates per part are usually lower, an increase in production occurs, which also increases efficiency. Finally, powder coating provides an attractive and durable finish, offering excellent resistance to corrosion, heat, impact, and abrasion.

“From a manufacturing and production operations standpoint, Montel’s new state-of-the-art powder coating finishing system equipment will benefit our product’s lead times”, explained Olivier Marcoux, Montel’s Engineering and Production Manager. “The durability and dependability of steel, combined with powder coated finish, will ensure efficiency and savings to our clients.”

Member of the Canada Green Building Council, Montel has an ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and recognizes the importance of manufacturing upscale products that meet and exceed environmental standards while focusing on green-building initiatives that contribute to a more sustainable workspace environment. Knowing that one of the greatest advantages of powder coatings technology is that it is environmentally acceptable because of its potential to replace hazardous air pollutants and VOC emitting solvent-borne coatings, with the acquisition of a state-of-the-art powder coating finishing system equipment, Montel is focusing attention on the environmental needs and desires of its partners: architects, designers, customers, suppliers, and its employees.
