Certification LEED pour le Chicago Botanical Gardens

Logo Chicago Botanic Garden

December 8, 2009

Montel, a pioneer of high-density mobile storage shelving system solutions, is pleased to announce that it has recently completed an outstanding project at the Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Plant Conservation Science Center within the Chicago Botanic Garden complex. In conjunction with Montel’s Local Authorized Distributor, Felix Loeb, this contract was for the supply and installation of Montel’s mobile storage units, museum storage cabinets and SmartShelf 4-Post hybrid shelving.

The Plant Conservation Science Center was designed to achieve the U.S. Green Building Council's gold rating for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and is one of the premier examples of LEED construction practices completed in 2009.

The Montel Mobilex high-density mechanical mobile storage system includes unique features such as custom 117"H SmartShelf and Model M242 Full Height Double Door Herbarium cabinets for storage of plant specimens. In addition to the overall concept of High-Density Mobile Storage with its inherent benefits of reduced area for storage, Montel's commitment to environmentally-friendly manufacturing processes includes the use of recycled-content steel, recycling its own steel scrap, and use of powder-coating paint which emits no volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

The Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Plant Science Center provides laboratories and teaching facilities for more than 200 Ph.D. scientists, land managers, students, and interns whose research is critical to fulfilling the Garden’s efforts to save our planet by saving our plants. The 38,000-square-foot Plant Science Center also serves as home to a unique doctoral program in plant biology and conservation with Northwestern University and as headquarters for the Garden’s international efforts in plant conservation. A viewing gallery and the 16,000-square-foot Green Roof Garden are open to the public, giving nearly 800,000 visitors and schoolchildren each year the opportunity to view plant science firsthand.
